“Wait what! We’re going on a helicopter ride to Zermatt?” That’s my reaction when I finally understood what the surprise of the day was about.
It was a morning like any other until Mathew, my boyfriend sent me a message very last minute, asking me if I was free from about 11am to 4pm for a surprise. Even though I was in the middle of my Bachelor Thesis and had a very strict schedule, I said yes! I mean, who says no to a promising surprise?!
I waited until 11am for Mathew to pick me up. I was so excited and also nervous – I love surprises, but am also always a bit stressed about the « not knowing » part of it, if you see what i mean? 😉
He drove for a few minutes before I realize he was driving uptown. The more he drove, the more I had suspicions about where we were going, until we finally arrived at the small airport that we have in Lausanne, the city where I live.
That’s where I understood that we were about to go on a helicopter drive. What a surprise!!! I was so looking forward to this ride! But the surprise wasn’t over. I still had no clue about what we were doing exactly: a helicopter tour over Lausanne? Somewhere else? Would we actually go somewhere and stay for a little while? I had no idea.
We quickly were told to jump on the helicopter and started flying! I still had no idea what we were doing exactly, yet was appreciating the view as we were flying higher and higher.
At some point, I heard the two pilots, one being Mathew’s dad who’s a helicopter pilot in his free time (hence the ride we had the chance to do), talking about the destination. Zer… Zerma-What? Zermatt? Wow! Going on a heli ride was already a surprise, but going to Zermatt is like… crazy! Moreover, I have so many childhood memories in Zermatt from ski holidays, I really love this place!
A few minutes later, and a few test landings later (the pilots had to exercice landings on the way as part of their license requirements), we landed in Zermatt!
I felt so privileged to be able to witness the beauty of the Matterhorn and many other snow-covered mountains from the sky right before arriving. It was wonderful and an incredible experience that I’ll never forget!
On site, we had a delicious typical italian mountain lunch, as we landed close to the italian border and went to a restaurant there. It was such a nice atmosphere!
We enjoyed the lunch, then took many pics on site as you can see, and finally took the heli back to Lausanne.
It was a beautiful afternoon that I will remember for a long time! I feel very grateful to have been able to experience this. If you ever have the chance to do something like this, go for it! It’s incredible!
I’ll let you to the photos and the video for you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and good vibes of this very special day!
Love, Pauline
